The Decatur Police Department’s National Night Out Campaign begins Tuesday.

The event aims to build better police-community relationships by bringing the community in contact with the police under positive circumstances, Decatur police spokesman Lt. Proncey Robertson said.

Police are encouraging neighborhoods to host their own block parties throughout the week. Participating neighborhoods should have had their registration forms submitted by July 18, he said.

The department is hosting some friendly competitions for participating groups, including a theme party competition, sidewalk chalk competition and the burglar challenge.

Each group should submit photos of their parties and sidewalk chalk at hatchley@decatur-al.gov. Descriptions of the burglar sent to their parties should be submitted to the same email address, Robertson said.

All submissions are due Thursday. Competition winners will be announced on the Decatur Police Department’s Facebook page on Aug. 5.
